The Gist
I hope this dispatch finds you well!
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act - signed on Fourth of July - is officially law. It’s an imperfect bill. There are provisions I like, provisions I’m ambivalent about, and provisions I’m not too keen on. I think the green subsidies repeal could have gone further, but it’s a good start. I’m told two more mini-reconciliation bills could emerge this fall and next spring.
America’s 249th birthday is a perfect tee-up to America250. I hope your holiday weekend was swell. Mine was.
But for some of our fellow Americans, sadly, this wasn’t a celebratory occasion. A tragic, once-in-a-century storm hit Camp Mystic in Kerr County, Texas, killing at least 80 people, as of this writing. Unsurprisingly, attention-seeking social media vultures are blaming climate change and Republican voting habits for said flooding, claiming the camp had it coming for being located in GOP-voting Texas. Sickening. If you want to help the victims and their families, here’s a good charity to support.
