This Week in Review:
Lithuania Lands on Lonely Planet’s ‘2025 Best in Travel’ List
I might be biased, but I’m a big Lithuania booster. Nobody is telling me to write this. I just admire the country my parents hail from. I’ve raved about this tiny Baltic nation in my Townhall column and on social media following my “homecoming” there this past summer.
I believe so strongly in strengthening ties between the U.S. and Lithuania, I stay engaged in outreach efforts and frequently interact with fellow Lithuanians—most recently meeting with Lithuanian Ambassador to the U.S. Audra Plepytė.
Lonely Planet, a leading travel authority, agrees with me and finds Lithuania charming and endearing. The website said Lithuania is the No. 2 destination for 2025 travel. They write:
In a world that commodifies the terms "conservation" and "sustainability", Lithuania epitomizes both. Named the European Green Capital of 2025, there’s never been a better time to explore its protected forests, lakes and sandy dunes along the Baltic Sea. Green spaces cover 61% of its capital, Vilnius, with unmissable attractions like the recently restored Sapieha Palace.
Don’t take my word for it. See Lithuania for yourself. It’s a beautiful country rich in history, food, and culture. It still feels very “indie” and yet to be discovered. (That’s intentional.)
Right before my vacation, my mom jokingly said I will enjoy Lithuania - especially Vilnius - so much, I won’t want to leave. She was right. I did leave a bit of my heart there and want to come back. I’m not sure when that will be, but I hope visit again soon.
I’m enjoying a much-needed travel break and am eagerly following our elections here in the U.S. But do as Lonely Planet suggests: plan a trip to Lithuania.
Conservation is on the Ballot
Since the summer, major news outlets have been fascinated with campaign outreach efforts to America’s hunters, anglers, and gun owners.
New York Post swing state reporter Victoria Churchill first brought the effort to light examining why gun owners and hunters reportedly sit out of elections. Her reporting, supported by data from Vote4America, found 10 million of these sportsmen and women simply don’t vote. That can make or break elections - especially in decisive swing state contests. MeatEater contributor Jordan Sills similarly wrote about hunter voting behaviors recently, and how this demographic could tilt the election on November 5th.
While conservation overtones are found in both campaigns, it’s obvious one is more friendly to sportsmen and women than the others. What’s being overlooked nationally, however, is the effort to enhance - or erode - conservation. Let’s examine three proposed ballot measures in Arizona, Colorado, and Florida.
