Oil & Gas Industry Gets Boost from New Paramount+ Show
Taylor Sheridan's latest is a must-watch.
Good morning,
Like many Americans, I’ve been captivated by the new Landman series on Paramount+. It’s the latest program from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan’s TV universe. Paramount TV has been showing free previews since the return of Season 5, Part II of Yellowstone.
If you support the oil and gas industry, Landman is Hollywood’s first attempt to portray O&G workers in a sympathetic light. While I’ve never directly worked in the energy industry, I appreciate the difficult work roughnecks and energy workers undertake each day. Most Americans, sadly, don’t understand how their contributions power everyday life—be it fuel, electricity, or petroleum byproducts.
The November 17th premiere netted 5.2 million viewers across Paramount TV and Paramount+. Actor Billy Bob Thornton leads the series as landman Tommy Norris. He’s joined by Ali Larter, Demi Moore, Jon Hamm, and some regular Taylor Sheridan universe actors.
Landman is based off of the limited podcast series, Boomtown, that ran from 2019-2020. I’ve been binge listening to the show recently to get a gist for the TV series. It’s very well-produced. Here’s a synopsis:
In a rugged corner of West Texas, billionaire wildcatters and roughnecks are fueling an oil boom so big it’s reshaping our climate, our economy, and our geopolitics. This modern-day gold rush has sent both big oil companies and scrappy start-ups scrambling to secure a piece of the action.
Some actual landmen and wildcatters I’m connected to reacted to the series. The guys also discuss if the show is good - or bad - for the industry. I recommend watching their reaction in full.
Taylor Sheridan brilliantly weaves current events - like tensions between conservation and development - into his shows like Yellowstone and Landman. In Episode 3 - which I haven’t seen yet - Thornton’s character expertly lambasts wind turbines. See for yourself!

Love the series. My son is a petroleum engineer who graduated college in 2023 and is working in North Dakota fracking oil with hopes to eventually end up in the gulf. The series is helping me understand what my son’s work life is really like. Very eye opening even though he sends us pictures etc.
